Where It Started

The Joke I Grew Up Answering

I grew up watching the world reduce my country to a punchline. A movie character with a mankini and a mispronounced name. That was the version of Kazakhstan most outsiders carried in their heads. None of it was mine.

Mine was the steppe at dawn, silver with frost. My grandmother's hands shaping bread for the earth oven. Eagle hunters who still ride the ridgelines above Almaty. A herd of horses that has never needed a human to tell it what to do.

"The steppe does not perform. It does not try to impress you. I wanted to build something that didn't either."

The Horses

Wild, Not Trained

These are not therapy animals broken in for strangers. They're a semi-wild herd, left alone to just be horses: grazing, sparring, resting, watching. That's the actual reason they heal people.

A horse that hasn't been trained to perform calm around you will tell you the truth about your own nervous system. It notices what you're carrying before you say a word. There's nothing to perform for either of you, just two bodies, breathing, figuring out how to be still together.

The Team

Small By Design

There's no big operation behind Beyond Steppe. It's me and a small team who actually run everything: cook the meals, look after the horses, keep the fire going. Nobody here is outsourced or seasonal.

I'm at every retreat myself, or someone from the small team who's been with me from the start. It's the only way I know to keep this honest as it grows.
