A First-Timer's Guide to Almaty and the Tien Shan Foothills

Getting to Almaty

Almaty Airport connects directly to a growing list of European and Asian hubs, and most guests fly in a day before their retreat starts, more if they want time in the city. We arrange your transfer from the airport as part of every retreat, so the only thing you need to plan is your flight.

A Day or Two in the City First

If you can spare it, give yourself a day in Almaty before heading into the mountains. Walk Panfilov Park under the trees. Ride the Kok Tobe cable car up for the first real look at the Tien Shan range that will fill your view for the rest of the trip. Eat more than you plan to, the food here doesn't get the reputation it deserves internationally.

It's also, practically, a good way to land on local time before four days without much cell signal.

The Drive Into the Foothills

From Almaty, it's a few hours by road into the Tien Shan foothills, and the drive is part of the experience rather than dead time. The city thins out, then disappears. Grassland opens up on both sides. Somewhere in there, you stop seeing anything built by anyone, and the steppe just is what it is.

What to Pack, What to Leave

Layers matter more than anything else, mountain weather shifts fast even in summer, and mornings by the herd are cold regardless of season. Sturdy, broken-in shoes. A journal, if you keep one, most guests wish they had. Leave the itinerary-planning instinct at home, this isn't that kind of trip, and the days will tell you what they need.
