What to Pack for a Steppe Retreat

A trail through the mountains near the retreat

We send a full packing list once your dates are confirmed, but the short version fits in one blog post, and it starts with one rule: mountain weather doesn't care about your itinerary.

Layers, Not One Big Coat

Mornings in the Tien Shan foothills can start close to freezing and end warm by afternoon, even in summer. A thick jacket alone leaves you either sweating or cold. Two or three thin layers you can add and shed do more than one heavy one, every time.

Real Shoes

Waterproof hiking boots or sturdy trail shoes, already broken in before you arrive. You'll be on uneven ground near the horses and on short walks most days. This isn't the place to test out new boots for the first time.

What Actually Matters

  • A warm layer for the evening fire, temperatures drop fast after dark
  • A rain shell, even if the forecast looks clear
  • Sunscreen and a hat, altitude sun is stronger than it feels
  • A headlamp or small flashlight, there's no streetlight out here
  • A reusable water bottle
  • Any medication you take regularly, brought in its original packaging

What You Don't Need

Formal clothes, a hairdryer, a second suitcase. Nobody is dressing for dinner. Most guests over-pack the first time and under-use half of it. Bring less than you think, you can always layer.

Have a specific question, medical or otherwise? Ask us directly when you apply, we'll tell you exactly what to bring for your dates and your retreat.
